A general surgeon with about 20 years of experience in the field, Dr Wong Soong Kuan currently practises out of his clinic at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. He specialises in advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques in colorectal surgery and has a special interest in anorectal surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery and endoscopy.
Dr Wong graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1988) and did his basic training at Singapore General Hospital, Toa Payoh Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Changi General Hospital. He subsequently specialised in surgery and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (FRCS, 1993). He also completed his MMED (Surg) post graduate qualifications the same year and was awarded the Chapter of Surgeons Gold Medal for distinction in the examination. He was inducted into the Academy of Medicine Singapore (Surgery) in 1998.
Dr Wong undertook subspecialty training at the University of Minnesota as a colorectal fellow (1997 to 1998) and as a laparoscopic fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio (1998 to 1999) through the Health Manpower Development Programme. During this period, he was awarded the outstanding research fellow award at the Cleveland Clinic. He was also awarded the Chapter of Surgeons Travelling Fellowship from Jiichi Medical School, Japan.
Prior to coming into private practice, Dr Wong was a consultant at the Department of General Surgery at Changi General Hospital. He is currently a visiting consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
Dr Wong’s dedication to the medical field has also extended to being part of the medical team in operation Desert Storm in 1991. He was attached to the 205 Territorial Army Surgical Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for two months. For his contributions he was awarded the Gulf Medal.
Teaching is also an aspect of medicine that Dr Wong chose to be involved in and was recently appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. A well-published surgeon, Dr Wong has papers in several peer-reviewed journals such as Diseases of the Colon & Rectum and British Journal of Surgery.
