Dr Tan Yah Yuen is a breast surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
Her interests are in treating breast disorders including breast lumps, nipple discharge and breast cancer.
She is also experienced in minimally invasive breast surgery, including ultrasound guided vacuum-assisted needle biopsies (mammotomy), and procedures such as ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted needle biopsy.
Dr Tan was a former senior consultant at the breast surgery department at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. While there, she started the Sentinel Lymph Node Programme for early breast cancer using dual-radionuclide with the blue dye technique. She had previously set up the same programme at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. This procedure is now the standard of care for women with early breast cancer.
She attended a one-year fellowship programme at the University of California, San Francisco, US, where she honed her skills in breast and endocrine surgery. She has experience in lecturing in various minimally invasive breast biopsy courses in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
She was the principal investigator of a three-year trial that studied the usefulness of mammary ductoscopy in the diagnosis of abnormal nipple discharge and breast cancer.
Dr Tan is a member of the International Society of Surgery and Breast Surgery International, and has published papers in publications such as the World Journal of Surgery and the Annals of Surgical Oncology.
