Dr Philip Eng is a respiratory physician practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in the treatment of respiratory disorders, such as pneumonia, chronic cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pleural effusion (fluid build-up in the chest). His clinical interests include the treatment of lung cancer, management of intensive care cases, bronchoscopy and chest radiology.
Dr Eng completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1984 and Master of Medicine in 1989. He went on to pursue advanced training in pulmonary (lungs) and critical care medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA and at the University of California, San Diego, USA.
In 1997, Dr Eng was appointed the head of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was instrumental in establishing the Department's strong linkages with chest radiology, thoracic (chest) surgery and thoracic cancer.
In 2007, Dr Eng was the president of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Congress of Bronchology, held in Singapore.
Dr Eng has published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and books. In 2005, he published a book titled, ‘Chest X-rays: Illustrated with 100 Cases’, in collaboration with the Cambridge University Press. He has lectured in many countries, such as the USA, China, Japan, Korea, Australia, India, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines.
