Why do I need to get vaccinated?

Vaccination is your best defense against infectious diseases and potentially serious health risks.

Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognise and fight off harmful viruses that cause disease. By getting vaccinated, you protect not only yourself, but also your family and loved ones who may be more vulnerable, especially infants, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.

At Parkway Shenton, we offer a range of adult and childhood vaccinations to suit your family’s every need.

As adults, it is just as important to get vaccinated to protect ourselves and those around us. Vaccines can help prevent serious illnesses and complications, and can even save lives.

In line with the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule, we recommend getting vaccinations for:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV2 or HPV9)
  • Influenza (INF)
  • Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13)
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPSV23)

Did you know that the human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer? Young women between ages 9 – 26 should receive the vaccine before their first sexual exposure. Older women are also suitable for vaccination.

Our Parkway Shenton clinics offer:

  • Cervarix (HPV2) at $125 (with GST)
  • Gardasil 9 (HPV9) at $254 (with GST)

If you’re a Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get the Cervarix vaccine at our CHAS-accredited clinics at subsidised rates:

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, can cause outbreaks all year round in tropical countries like Singapore. While the symptoms of flu are typically fever, head and body ache, sore throat and runny nose, it can potentially lead to more serious complications such as pneumonia, ear and sinus infections, and even inflammation of the heart and brain.

Getting the influenza vaccine protects against flu and reduces your risk of getting flu-related complications. It is highly recommended for high-risk groups such as:

  • Children aged 6 months - 18 years
  • Individuals with chronic health conditions (eg. diabetes, asthma)
  • Individuals aged 50 years and above
  • Caregivers who live with or care for those with high risk of influenza
  • Pregnant women

At Parkway Shenton, our clinics offer:

  • Quadrivalent flu vaccine at $43.50 (with GST)

This vaccine is designed to protect against 4 different influenza viruses (two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses).

Influenza Vaccine Recommendations by MOH

The Ministry of Health (MOH) advises that annual vaccination is recommended to protect individuals against circulating influenza viruses. Those who last received influenza vaccine during or prior to the 2022/23 NH* season and those who have never been vaccinated should be vaccinated with the 23SH* seasonal influenza vaccine. For optimal protection, vaccination is recommended early in the season.

2022/23 NH = Northern Hemisphere 2022/23
This addresses the seasonal influenza epidemic from September/October 2022 – March/April 2023.

23SH = Southern Hemisphere 23
This addresses the seasonal influenza epidemic from March / April 2023 - September / October 2023.

Pneumococcal diseases can lead to serious infections such as pneumonia, meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) and bloodstream infections. Getting vaccinated protects you against common strains of the bacterium Streptococcus pneumonia, which is spread through respiratory droplets of infected people.

Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for:

  • Individuals aged 18 years and above with chronic illnesses (e.g. chronic lung, heart, kidney or liver diseases, diabetes mellitus)
  • Individuals who have lower body resistance to infections (immunocompromised)
  • Individuals who have other medical conditions (e.g. cochlear implants, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, abnormal spleen function)

At Parkway Shenton, we offer:

  • Prevenar 13 (PCV13) at $195 (with GST)
  • Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23) at $87 (with GST)

Infants should receive 2 doses of PCV13 at ages 3 months and 5 months, with a booster at 12 months. For seniors aged 65 years and above, 1 dose each of PCV13 and PPSV23 is recommended.

Travelling to another country for business or leisure? Vaccinations can protect you against diseases that may be endemic in certain parts of the world, such as yellow fever in Africa.

Common travel vaccinations include:

  • Influenza (flu)
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • COVID-19

Be sure to speak to your doctor before travelling to discuss which vaccines you may need.
